Worldwide, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and has surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in women in the latter part of 1980s. It is estimated that more than 500 000 new cases are diagnosed each year; approximately 15–20% of lung cancer patients have small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and the other patients have non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), such as adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.
